Travelling Light

If you wish to travel far and fast, travel light. Take off all your envies, jealousies, unforgiveness, selfishness and fears.
Cesare Pavese

Ever wished you could take a holiday from yourself? I have such plans before I go away. I imagine this relaxed me chilling at the beach, walking in the mountains and laughing delightedly at nothing in particular. Of course I am thinner and prettier and just “oh so happy' with everything! Instead, the reality is that no matter where I go, I take myself along and that is not always a good thing. Travel sickness, an aversion to mattresses that other people have slept on and a natural impatience are a few issues that spring to mind. I'm just saying!

We all have excess baggage that we carry around and usually have been for quite some time. Sometimes it really is a whole lot of stuff we've shoved into cupboards but it can also be relationships that we have outgrown but hang on to out of habit. If we dig a little deeper, underneath both of these, we often find outdated thought patterns that weigh us down, and keep us stuck. When we are bogged down with useless things, bad relationships and unhelpful beliefs, we get stressed and life loses its sparkle.

If your boss ridicules or shames you, or a co-worker snubs you, through professionalism we often shove our emotions into the closet and ignore our feelings. When friends or lovers let us down, we keep quiet because we don't have the time or energy to fight every battle. While these are effective short term strategies that we do need to employ at times, if it becomes our modus operandi, over the long term, the build up becomes a problem.

So how do we lighten our loads and clean out our closets so to speak? Every now and then spend some time with yourself. Sit quietly without the usual noise and distraction and allow  things that were hidden to come to light. Come back to all those times when you've had a strong emotional reaction to something, but have suppressed your response because it was the appropriate thing to do.

Ask yourself what happened for you? What was going on inside you? What were you reacting to? Examine your thoughts, your emotions and your relationships. Are you reacting to a memory or a reality? It is only when we know what we are dealing with that we are able to decide if this is something of value to keep or something outdated to toss.
Happy travels!

I agree! I think the way you interact in life is the way you feel inside. It is hard to leave things behind, but this is an inspiring post!

Glad you got it! As hard as letting things go can be, it really can be the best thing for you.

Great post. I have a tendency of taking myself along on my trips, as well, and she can be a bit impatient, as well. But, we, and by 'we', I mean, "me, myself, and I", we are learning.

Nice opening with the traveling baggage, which is actually something represent our baggage in life. The question that you ask "Are you reacting to a memory or a reality?" is really a nice platform to learn how we react when we deal with certain things.

It is one of the things we work a lot on in coaching, questioning if our habits and beliefs are still relevant or is it time to let them go. A surprising amount are best let go of.

I was carrying too much baggage and it did not feel fully fine. I learned to let go, left some in different places they should be. Now, I feel better. :) Simply inspiring and how you connect things.

Baggage does weigh us down and has a way of stopping us from enjoying what is happening here and now. It's great to hear you have succeeded with letting some stuff go.

When I started reading this, my big move to Spain in just a few weeks came to mind. I am really going to try to pack light although I know it will be tougher than I think. And you are right about old things we keep around ... old ways of thinking and old habits. It's best to break them off.

Although it is nice to have some familiar things around in a new place, there is something about having a fresh start that can be even nicer! Good luck with your move, Nina, I hope it is a happy and stress free one for you.

Excess baggage? Always and I don't know why. It happens every single time but the fun thing is that when you are there you realize all the unnecessary crap that you have but when you do it again it happens all over again jaja, funny right?

ah letting go of baggage - reminds me of shadow work - where you learn to work through and let go of the past, so that you can move on to a brighter tomorrow. Great post!

Thanks, Claudia. It is amazing what we hold on to! There are some wonderful books on shadow work which I have also found very helpful.

This is a great read! I have been working on my baggage for a while and little by little I am overcoming some of it however I know it won't all go away. Taking time for me really does help though. Journaling also helps me air my baggage.

It is great that you are making progress with it, Carrie, and journalling is a great tool to help you pick up patterns that we aren't always aware of.

I love the reminder. There are times wherein we're too afraid to let go of someone because we're used to having them around, but really, we have to think about how healthy they are to have or how toxic they can get. And once we realize the truth, we should decide if it's time to let go or to keep holding on.

You have summed that up so beautifully, Elizabeth, to give ourselves the time to decide, rather than react without thought.

Its true, I find if I don't say anything or be honest about how I feel the closet becomes full and then it will all come to a boil.

And when that explodes, all hell can break loose. Sometimes I almost think meditation and contemplation can be a way to hold planned and controlled explosions to sort of minimize the damage, so to speak.

I think this is a good idea. It's healthy to look back at the emotions we've felt and think about them.

Sometimes taking the time to do that, Liz can give you real insight into a hidden part of yourself that could use some attention. The trick is not too get stuck there!

To go to holiday is not always the answer - I know from experience. It's better to solve the issues before travelling then you can start it clean and light.

Much better idea, Tiina!. Years ago my now husband and I travelled together in a van for a nearly a year. In the middle of Canada we had a ridiculous fight over something irrelevant and took it with us for two weeks. I remember being so upset but I honestly can't remember why. So funny!

My husband and I love to travel and I never thought about it like this. I try to leave everything at home when we leave but sometimes it isn't as easy as it seems. ):

It sounds dead obvious, doesn't it, Megan, but it really can be difficult sometimes. It takes such self mastery to be able to mange your emotions 24/7. I wish!

Enjoy your time decompressing and refreshing your inner soul. We all need that from time to time.

Decompressing, now that is a fabulous word! Especially for someone like me with a rather over-active imagination.

I think you won't be any happier on a holiday if you don't work with your problems and on yourself. This was such a waking call. also, you don't need a vacation to be happy, you just have to realize that you are more luckier than you could ever be. Stop wasting your life!

The worst is when we are sitting in some wonderful place unable to enjoy it because of something we are feeling form another place and time!

This is such a liberating article and so true. I do try to consider sometimes why I wish to hold onto things. I once heard a quote"Don't look to the past it has nothing new to say." I found it profound because it's true. I also find writing things down and getting it in paper helps me work through things. That's why I blog! Thanks for sharing.

I love that quote, Kate and hadn't heard it before. It is so spot on, when we go round and round old stories, it really is more of the same old, same old! I also find writing and ahem, writing blogs in particular, very helpful in working through that 'sticky' stuff.

I loved reading this! So, so true! No matter how "okay" I think I am or how spiritually strong I may feel, something always seems to pop up and trigger an emotion that I thought was long put to bed. It is then that I am reminded of just how much unnecessary baggage I actually carry! Just yesterday I took that "time out", alone time, to be with myself ..... and it did me the world of good! THANKS Tania, for the enjoyable reads! Love and light xxx

Thanks so much, Michelle and it's you and me both! It's good to hear that you took some time out for yourself. That time to process and re-adjust is invaluable.
