What's your Story?

By dawn he had surrendered, gratefully, to the old inertia,
the product of always seeing both sides of every question.
Robert Harris

The other day I was singing along to One Direction's 'Story of my Life' and it got me thinking about the story of my own life. We all have one, that thing we tell ourselves over and over again. Here's what I mean.

I decided to bake gluten-free muffins and found a recipe using coconut flour and grapeseed oil. Sounds simple enough, and it was until I started over-thinking things and inadvertently opened a nutritional Pandora's Box. First up, the Blood Type diet tells me to avoid all things coconut, not great for gluten-free baking as coconut flour is used in many recipes. Almond flour is an alternative which sounds delicious, but unfortunately is a goitrogen and not a good choice for thyroid problems. Nor is soya flour which is added to many gluten-free products and is a definite no-no for Hashimoto's.

I haven't even started on grapeseed oil yet! Canola is the new bad boy of cooking oil while grapeseed is being hailed as the healthy high heat alternative. Or so it seemed until I Googled and discovered grapeseed oil is high in Omega 6 and polyunsaturated fatty acid and should be avoided. By this stage my head was spinning and I felt like a ping pong ball. All I wanted is for someone to just tell me what to do.

And that dear readers, is the story of my life. I tell myself that I don't know what's best for me and that I need someone else to tell me how to live my life. Hoo boy! As anyone who has ever Googled something, or asked more than one person for an opinion knows, for every person who tells you one thing, five people will disagree, usually vehemently.

At the end of the day, each and every one of us has to take responsibility for our own lives. It's the old, 'If it's to be, it's up to me!' Ultimately it is our decision how we respond to what happens. When things go wrong we can choose to collapse in a helpless heap or we can choose a course of action and give it our best shot. There are amazing stories of people overcoming incredible obstacles for all sorts of crazy reasons. It starts by uncovering the story we tell ourselves, the one that is holding us back, making us smaller than we truly are. So what's your story?

I know you can't always to everything right, but you can choose the right thing for you if you let yourself accept where you are. Where you are is your starting point. Where you can end up is entirely up to you.

Well said, Jacqueline, a favourite coaching phrase is - If it's to be, it's up to me!

Love this. I'm always Googling for answers when I probably should be. It usually tells me I'm dying or close to it... I try not to listen to how people tell me I should be and instead be how I like to be.

Lol, Google is dangerous for that, it can have you terrified and neurotic at the drop of a hat. And good for you for making the effort to be authentic!

Eating is so complicated nowadays...I kinda miss the old times when it all was so simple and healthy. Gosh, I am an over thinker too !

Lol! And as easy as that we are off over thinking! There really is just too much information out there these days, and I miss the old days as well. Ignorance is bliss as they say.

"At the end of the day..." - this is so true. I'm gluten free in c.a. 70% ... It means I avoid gluten but not every day. Thanks for posting! Well written.

That has worked well for me as well, Dreamerin. A Naturopath I worked with had a 80% be good and 20% relax and enjoy your life philosophy. I find it's more sustainable that way.

Love this read! Altho I'm not gluten-free, I've switch to a more vegetarian/vega n lifestyle so at first finding foods I could have that didn't have some form of dairy or honey was tough. But a little research has def made it simplier.

Dairy is everywhere isn't it? And it's my absolute favourite food. I tried a vegan cheese the other day and it was yuckky. At least these days there are a lot of alternatives to try. Good luck with you dietary changes, Jennifer.

Ugh overthinking these stuff is such a hassle because if you read all the health books you end up avoiding everything.

Lol,Vlad, you end up malnutritioned and starving simply by trying to be healthy. I really am trying a more 'everything in moderation' approach these days.

I remember one of my friend said, "Everything we put in our mouth nowadays are all poison, we just have to live with it." It shocking how food which we consider healthy actually contains things that is bad for our health.

Many years ago, I au paired for a family where the son had extreme food allergies and I had to start reading labels. What a shock, it's criminal what is added to food.

I believe in eating healthy food but sometimes I follow my heart and eat whatever I like and then burn those calories at the gym!

Not that sounds like a fabulous, middle of the road, plan, Ana. A little bit of everything and not too much of anything.

It's one of the things you realize as you age, it's up to us how we live our lives. Love that you're owning up to your actions but at the same time also admitting that you also need some guidance from time to time.

Yes, it's both, isn't it. For me it has been about learning to trust myself to make the final call. It's not always easy, though.

Oh no! It's good that everyone can do their own research now. There is definitely a lot of misinformation you have to sift through to get to the real stuff though!

And Liz, it is like a rabbit hole when you start digging. There is an opinion for almost everything out there, so it really comes down to getting to know your body and what works for you. At least that is what I have found works best.

That is like granola , it is touted as a healthy food option when in reality its full of sugar and chemicals.

Granola and all these muesli type cereals are absolute shockers when you read the ingredient list. I have been making my own for a while and it's great, just time consuming.

I was buy Grapeseed oil too thinking I was doing a good thing. My wife discovered also that it was bad for me. I give up.

Lol, Keith! I did exactly the same and apparently Grapeseed is one of the worst, after Canola, which, of course, I used for years. Life is much more pleasant since I too, gave up.

Better choice to make is either to cut down carbs or increase it. In the end fat is essential. Am talking from a body perspective.

That is the one good thing from all of this, the end of the low fat era!

I think there are worse things to think about than what oil to use or what flour to use. Taking responsibility of our actions and of our lives, is a sign of maturity. We are our own "owners" and only we can take the best decisions for us. Olive oil or coconut oil... they are both healthy and each will give the muffins a slightly different flavor :) Just an example

You have hit the nail on the head, Joanna. When we start taking responsibility for our choices, we make the right decision for us, whatever that might be, trendy or not.

And that is exactly the point, It goes from being the latest greatest good for you thing, to the latest greatest worst for you thing just like that.

My new philosophy in life is 'everything in moderation'. There are too many rules (that seem to contradict one another) - and I think i would go crazy trying to follow them. We just eat organic and sensibly. You're not alone!

Sensible rules! I have gone in the same direction, Vanessa and it is much, much better. All these fads drive you crazy trying to keep up.

That;s so true Marta, we think it is good or bad without knowing how it will pan out in the future. It's too funny when you think of it logically but these emotions of ours are really quite troublesome!

It was a fun exercise writing this, I must say. Hopefully it's not THE story of my life but one of the many. It really is helpful to check in every now and then and see what story is running the show, they are not always in our best interests! Thanks for commenting.

I am an over thinker too. I used to be gluten free and I used Almond Meal in baking it is amazing. I also used instant vanilla pudding mix it is a secret to creating the softness that doesnt happen in alot of gluten free baking.
